That One Time We Cruised, part 1: It Could Have Gone Poorly

Soooo . . . We went on a family vacation . . . six months ago. And I wrote down all these notes for an exceedingly witty, delightful blog post. Which I then proceeded not to write. And now I’ve forgotten what half of my notes meant, so I won’t be nearly as entertaining now as I would have been then. But better late than never?

And with that enthusiastic intro (drum roll please), let me tell you about That One Time We Cruised!

It turns out we took very, very few pics on this trip, so
mostly you'll just have to imagine for yourselves.
For our tenth anniversary, Brice decided to surprise me with a family Disney cruise! We would be gone about a week, sailing out of Florida, with a day at the end to hang out in Florida (we went to the Kennedy Space Center; more on that later).

As soon as we told anyone that we were going on this vacation, the immediate reaction was, “Oh, that’s so great! You will love it sooo much! Disney is the best!” Add to that the fact that it was a tenth anniversary gift, and I was beginning to feel all sorts of internal pressure for this to be the “best vacation ever!” But, honestly, I’ve never been a beach bum/swimsuit type, so I was starting to feel a little nervous. Oh, and the Friday before we left, I found out I was pregnant.

So that’s how things started, and day #1 did nothing to assuage my nervousness. There were People. People. Everywhere. Ugh. So many people. And so much pageantry. And the cast-off party was loud and also full of people. And lip-syching dancing. And that song where the guy pronounces “dynamite” as “dino-mite.” And did I mention all the people?!? And then we went to investigate the kids’ clubs on board, where Coriel and Addra would be spending lots of their time, and all I could see was that there were screens and movies everywhere. And I thought, “Why am I paying all this money for them to go on a cruise and have this awesome cruise experience if all they’re gonna do is sit around and watch movies? We could do that at home!”

Brice and I dropped the girls off at the kids’ club for a little while (they were very excited) and headed back to our room to sit around and relax for a few minutes (we had Koa with us, so yes, we were just sitting around and sort of relaxing at least), and finally it was all too much. I turned to Brice and said, “I really need some permission from you to hate this vacation.” And I cried ridiculously over it. Of course he said that was fine, because he’s awesome that way, and I took a deep breath. We picked up the kids, had dinner, and the first day was pretty much over.

Oh, did I also mention that of all of us, I’m the only one who could feel the roll of the ocean? It’s not like I felt terribly seasick, just that my head felt like it was on a very slow spin cycle. I couldn’t decide if it was the pregnancy plus being at sea, or if it was just the being at sea. But whatever it was, it just added to the really good times of the first day.

But don’t worry, it gets better from here on out.

"After" Pics for the Room Makeover

Hey, remember when we totally redid the girls' bedroom for Coriel's eighth birthday? Well, I'm finally posting some pics. I don't currently have the "before" pics because that would have required me remembering to take some (my lovely sister D took some, but she's got them, not me). If I get them, I'll try to remember to add them here.

For now, here are the "after" pics. And when I say "after," I mean right after. Because within an hour or two, it was kinda messy, and it just has not been the same since. :)

Note the tie fighter hanging over the bed. Also, my sister K insisted she had to put those cute stripes of purple/blue around the bed because the previous color clashed. I mocked her for her efforts, because they would be only temporary (it's construction paper, and it's mostly gone by now), but she was right. It did look much better.

Sister D made the cute curtains. she helped me learn to make the two bulletin boards hanging above the blue chair.

See how beautiful and neat those shelves look? Sigh. Now they look a little like a junkyard.

Our artwork isn't actually finished, but I'll get around to it someday. The girls and I did these together.

One of my awesomest ideas ever, brought to life by the sewing sister D again. It's a bedcave! The little curtains can be taken down (they're velcroed up), and they can also be closed so that there's a little cave area under the bed. Good times.

I'm pretty sure every home decor show ever has the scene where you recover a bench or chair or something, and it's "just so easy!" So I decided I had to give it a try. This bench used to be a polka-dotted red, and now it's a lovely gray/white zigzag. It wasn't as easy as it sounded, but it was still not too hard. Thanks again to D, who found the perfect fabric and helped do it. She was just awesome in this process overall, and I wouldn't have been able to get it done without her and K helping me.

Doesn't it look so nice and bright and clean and uncluttered?

The awesome sister who helped make it better than it would have been without her.

Coriel being very excited about it.

Okay, it's a blurry picture, but it's still fun!

Because obviously tables are for standing on.

The bedcave curtains closed.

How Goes the Pregnancy?

This is pretty much everyone’s favorite question when they see me. How are you doing? How’s the baby? Fine, fine, fine, all good. And it really is, overall. But in case you’re interested in the long version, here it is:

1. No internal heater. When people hear that you’re going to be super pregnant in the summer, they say, “Oh, that’s rough, you’re going to be so overheated!” When they hear it will be winter, they say, “Awesome, at least you’ll have an internal heater.” I have never experienced this phenomenon. In fact, I have felt generally colder during my two winter pregnancies, and even when I was massive in the muggy, new-to-me Maryland heat, I didn’t feel like it was any worse than when I wasn’t pregnant. I was expressing this to Brice, and he said, “You do have an internal baby heater. It’s just broken.” Well, that explains it then.

2. Emotional hostage. Here’s how I said this to the world of Facebook: “The baby has apparently taken my hormones and emotional regulation abilities hostage.” In practice this means that I am crying over some really dumb stuff lately. Like when my shower towel is too stinky. Or when I think about a story that I was going to write but didn’t. Or, you know, when I slightly overcook the grilled cheese sandwiches. (Even dumber stuff too, like fuzzy socks or the girls’ cute fashions, etc.) And then of course I also bawl over the not-dumb stuff, like when I’m tired and the girls have made a massive mess in their bedroom ten minutes after we’d just cleaned it up beautifully. Or when I am hungry but queasy and I can’t think of what to cook. Or when I’m stressing out about what it’s going to be like to have four kids. Which leads me to numbers 3 and 4 . . .

3. Nausea. So, I spent about a month and half feeling pretty decent most of the time. A couple bouts of queasiness here and there, but overall pretty great. And also not yet super uncomfortable, and also not super tired anymore. Of course, every time I started gloating about how I was feeling, I had a massive patch of vomiting (keeping me nice and humble!), but overall, I was doing well. Well, it seems we’re back to some fairly frequent queasiness again (though it is still low-grade and really nothing compared to women who actually have difficult pregnancies). And guess what are the two main things that help? Eating and lying down. As in, as long as I’m eating food, I feel fine. As soon as I stop, not so much. And then, after I eat, if I lie down for ten minutes or so, I feel better. So between these and just, you know, being pregnant, I’m pretty much going to explode into whale proportions.

Also, as of yesterday, it had been quite nearly a month since I had thrown up. And then came this month’s stomach bug, which has so far gotten four of the five of us. I can’t really tell, though, if my throwing up was because of 1: being sick; 2: pregnancy; or 3: having to clean up someone else’s vomit (honestly, Brice is the designated cleaner-upper in our house—for which he should be sainted—because I can’t stand it at all).

4. Four kids, plus labor and newborn stage and all that jazz. This should probably be broken down into two items, and I could actually write a whole blog post about it, but you’d get bored. So here’s the summary: Coriel’s labor: really hard. Addra’s: really easy. Koa’s: pretty hard. I’m freaking out that baby #4 will be more inclined to take after Coriel and Koa. But even if he’s not, “really easy” was still quite painful during the process. And then the newborn stage is insanely difficult for me (and when I say “newborn,” I mean “first two years at least”). I have, by and large, been not thinking about it all. Because every time I do, I become a major watering pot. I told Brice the other day that there should be a disorder called “pre-traumatic stress syndrome.” His response was, “Yeah, it’s called anxiety.” Which I guess is sort of true, but whatever it’s called, I’ve got a lot of stress and/or terror about labor/babyhood and then just plain being able to manage four kids.

At which point, someone reading this is thinking, “Well, then, you shouldn’t have had the fourth kid.” And my explanation may be hard to understand if you don’t believe in God the way that I do—because both Brice and I feel strongly that this was the right decision for our family, a prompting from God, even though it may be hard. So here’s a different way to look at it. Even if you don’t believe that God speaks directly to individuals to help and guide them, have you ever done something that you thought was hard and scary but you did it anyway because you felt like it would be a good thing? Maybe it was a job application, a college application, asking a specific person on a date, moving across country, training for a marathon. In so many of these cases, we take the plunge even if we don’t feel ready, even if we’re not sure we can handle it, because we believe it’s the best choice. And so here we all are, with me both pregnant and also freaking out. Because the bottom line is that even though I don’t feel ready, even though I’m pretty much terrified, I believe it’s the right choice and that when we make good, hard decisions, God makes it possible for us to do what is required.

5. Baby names—eek! It has already been pointed out to us from several sources (my sister K being the first) that if we name #4 a name that starts with E, our children will spell out CAKE. Now, I’m sure you can guess that this is the most important consideration in finding a baby name. Who doesn’t want their children to spell out a delicious dessert? So we’ve had quite a few E suggestions. Which is good, because at the rate we’re going, we’ll have to look through approximately a billion names to find two that we can sort of agree on. This baby had just better help us when he gets here, because so far the naming process is tough.

And that, my friends and foo, is how the pregnancy is really going. Thanks for asking! :)

Other Blogs Recap

Once again, I have been not writing here forever. And I’ve been writing at my other blogs only slightly more. Sigh. I am once again having to reevaluate what I really want from this blog and what its purpose is. It’s sort of an ongoing thing. In the meantime, let’s cut out all the angst and move straight to the blog post, in which I direct you to a whole bunch of other blog posts over at MMW and Callooh Callay Callay (seriously, I’m recapping favorites from the past two years, so it’s a bunch). Just in case you missed all my riveting words there.

I tried cutting some of these out, because it’s really far too many links for anyone who doesn’t have wacky, crazy-long attention abilities, but these are all things I would have shared here if I hadn’t shared on the other blogs. They are all personal and meaningful to me at least. So please feel free to pick and choose. Or don’t read any of them at all, but then still post a comment here saying something like, “Oh, Jeanna. You are so magical. Pretty much your every word has changed my life. Thank you for being so practically perfect in every way. Sincerely, Your Biggest Fan.”

So, without further ado (and in reverse chronological order) . . .

In Which I Brag (Just a Little). Where I talk briefly about the writing project that I did for my and Brice’s foos and share my little happy dancing over how it turned out.

Acts of God. Really, if you only read one, probably read this one. It’s where I talk a little more about this pregnancy.

Was It You? Also, you should read this one. It’s where I announced this pregnancy. Also, it’s a true story.

Author and Finisher, A Houseful of Marshmallows, InfinityTimes Infinity. A number of my thoughts from reading and thinking about the scriptures and trying to apply them to my life.

The Elizabeth Bennets. Okay, you can actually probably skip this one. I only included it as a favorite because I enjoyed my own footnotes and also because I made fun of pretty much every Austen novel (even though I love Austen).

She Was Good at Apologies. Musings on being an imperfect mom and what I hope my children learn from me.

A Thought on Pain. How we can perhaps look at pain differently.

You’d Be Surprised. How sometimes we really just have to open our mouths about the experiences we’re having—we’re rarely alone, and there are often lots of people out there who care about us and want to help.

PPD and Me. Talking about some of my postpartum days after Koa was born.

Half a Talent. How we really shouldn’t compare ourselves to others—especially the sheep-raising, farming types.

The Killer What If? Life rarely gives us only one opportunity for something. If you miss an opportunity, move on and try to be ready for the next.

Perspective Shift. What I learned from having our house broken into.

2015: A Brief Recap

Happy 2016! Our 2015 was pretty great, with the obligatory bad parts too—but overall, really wonderful. We have been very blessed. Highlights?

Our tenth anniversary, which we celebrated by taking all of us on a cruise. It was great fun, and we gained the obligatory several pounds (at least I did), but in the end we decided we’re not really cruise people. We’ll do it occasionally maybe but not really go out of our way for it. I had a giant blog post planned about this vacation, and I was so very funny in it. Just imagine me being hilarious and entertaining. There you go.

Koa developed all sorts of great abilities, and also many more teeth. You know, he learned the whole crawling, walking, running, babbling (though not really officially talking yet), eating all sorts of food, etc. The fun thing about the baby stage is just how many awesome accomplishments they check off in these first couple years. So 2015 was a big year for him.

Our stake was reorganized, so we and a few other families got moved out of the Glen Burnie Ward to the Brooklyn Park Branch. It has been quite an adjustment, but we have faith that this was what God wanted in this little corner of His church.

I, of course, got pregnant. Yay! And in case we didn’t mention it to you yet, we’re having a boy. And please don’t make some comment about, “Oh good, now Koa will have a friend.” Because then I will be tempted to shake my fist at you. Strangely, I have noticed that it’s possible for boys and girls, brothers and sisters, to be friends with each other! Shocking! My very best friend growing up was my older brother. While of course I hope Koa is awesome friends with his little brother, I also hope that all of the siblings will continue to get along in reasonable sibling fashion, regardless of gender. (Yikes, that turned into a soapbox! Whoops!)

I think probably the biggest and most exciting event of last year was Coriel’s baptism into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We are so proud of her for making this decision, and I continue to be amazed by what a great person she is. Honestly, I could gush forever. I’m just so happy she’s my kid and that she’s growing up to be such a lovely, wonderful young woman.

That was a very broad recap, and it left out all sorts of wonderful things from the previous year—things like my book club friends, homeschool and co-op, Brice’s runs, Addra’s fabulous fashion, and so many other things. But it’s the best I can do at the moment.

Stay tuned soon for a post in which I link to and recap a few of my favorite and/or important posts from the MMW blog I write at. I’ve been meaning to do that forever, in case you don’t follow me there, and now I’m finally going to get around to it.

In the meantime, much love to you, my biggest fans. AKA, my friends and foo who are too polite to just ignore me. Love you all!
